Protraction Headgear

Protraction headgear is used in patients with a reverse overjet, commonly known as “underbite”. In patients with a small upper Jaw, it is used to pull the top jaw and teeth forward so the top front teeth bite in front of the bottom front teeth. It is commonly used with a brace to widen the top jaw at the same time. Treatment time is usually 9-12 months. Further treatment to maintain the result may be required. Future assessment of jaw growth and development until the mid to late teens is usually required prior to definitive orthodontic treatment.

High quality research evidence of British children treated with a protraction headgear between 7-9 years of age showed that approximately 70% success in correcting reverse overjet (“underbite”). The research team then followed the patients for a number of years to assess future growth. They found that those treated with protraction headgear were approximately 30% less likely to require Jaw (Orthognathic) surgery in the future compared to those that were not treated.
