Functional Appliances (Braces)

Prominent (or sticking out) upper front teeth are a common problem in children and this particular problem has been linked with bullying. The risk of trauma/injury to upper incisors has been shown to increase to 45% for children with significantly protruding upper front teeth. A review of high quality research showed that providing orthodontic treatment from 7 years of age, appears to significantly reduce the incidence of damage to incisor teeth (front four teeth at the top) as compared to treatment that is provided when the child is in early adolescence.

Functional braces are a very popular and effective way of reducing the prominence of the top teeth in growing adolescents. These are very powerful braces for people who’s “teeth stick out” and the changes can be dramatic if treatment is undertaken at the appropriate time.
